Photos show the dramatic scene left behind after a serious car crash involving a police officer in St Albans.

At around 1.35pm this afternoon (Tuesday, May 12), emergency services were called to reports that a police car had overturned on London Road.

The police car had been responding to an incident and had hit a brick wall before overturning near to Cunningham Avenue by the railway bridge.

Other officers immediately closed off the road and an air ambulance as well as two ambulances, two rapid response vehicles, two ambulance officer vehicles, and fire crews.

The police officer inside the overturned car was seriously injured and was taken by road ambulance to hospital.

The road remains closed this evening while officers investigate what exactly happened.

Only one police officer was injured in the crash

Photos have now emerged of the scene and show a mass of destruction that was left behind.

Four police cars - including a collisions investigation van - can all be seen parked up inside the cordon close to the bridge as well as the one overturned police car which has been badly damaged.

One of its car doors can be seen hanging open while parts of its roof and windscreen can be seen scattered all over the place.

A Mini Cooper can also be seen lying perpendicular to the road and parts of its right hand side are damaged.

The pictures show officers making inquiries and investigations into what has happened.

Hertfordshire Constabulary is urging the public to avoid the area while they investigate.

A spokesperson for the force said: "London Road in St Albans is closed following a serious traffic collision which happened at 1.35pm this afternoon.

"Drivers carrying out essential journeys are asked to find alternative routes.

"Police, fire and ambulance and air ambulance are in London Road following the collision which happened near Cunningham Avenue by the railway bridge.

"A marked police car, which was responding to an incident, overturned after hitting a brick wall. The police officer has serious injuries and has been taken to hospital by air ambulance. No-one else was injured."

A spokesperson from the East of England Ambulance Service also said: "Two ambulances, two rapid response vehicles, two ambulance officer vehicles and East Anglian Air Ambulance attended at London Road, St Albans this afternoon (May 12), following reports of a road traffic collision involving a police car.

"One male patient was transported by road ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital."
