2AA Wrap: Shelby shines; North Davidson, South Point and West Lincoln all pull big upsets

Shelby looked every part the defending state champion in its 56-7 opening round win over West Iredell. There were multiple upsets in the West, and (12) West Lincoln with host (13) South Point.

In its first playoff game since winning last years state title, Shelby demolished West Iredell in the opening round. North Davidson avenged an early season loss to Oak Grove with the 43-7 thumping, but the Black Knights did have an injury, so that will be a question mark going forward for North Davidson. A 12 and 13 seed will meet in the second round. There were many lopsided wins in 2AA, but that should even out next week as the games become more competitive.

2AA East: First Round

  • (1) Randleman 42, (16) Morehead 0 - Overall No. 1 seeded Randleman took care of business in the opening round of the 2AA playoffs. Running back Na’hiem Lilly scored two of the Tigers four first quarter touchdowns. The Tigers led 35-0 at halftime and tacked on a scored in the third for a 42-0 win.
  • (8) Croatan 13, (9) East Duplin 21 - K.D. McClarin ran for 217 yards in the Panthers Thursday night win over higher-seeded Croatan. McClarin scored all three of East's touchdowns. The Panther defense held Croatan to 223 total yards of offense.
  • (5) Currituck 34, (12) St. Paul's 27 - This game was moved to Thursday with the threat of severe weather on Friday. Knights running back Traveon Powell scored the games first touchdown in the second quarter. The Knights scored with two seconds left in the second half to take the 14-7 lead. St. Paul's rallied late, but could not overcome the deficit.
  • (4) South Granville 26, (13) North Lenior 18 - The Hawks led immediately in this game, Justin Cobb took the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. North Lenior led 12-0. South Granville took the second half kickoff to the house to take the 13-12 lead. The Vikings sealed the deal in the fourth quarter with a pick six from Dominic Deloatch.
  • (3) Oak Grove 7, (14) North Davidson 43 - North Davidson began its quest to return to the state championship with a blow out, upset win over Oak Grove. Jaylin Walser, the teams leading rusher, sprained his ankle in the win, so his status for next week is unknown.
  • (6) Hertford County 28, (12) Ledford 7 - Hertford County went up 14-0 in the second quarter, but Ledford cut the lead in half on a Walker Lackey rushing touchdown. From there it was all Bears. Tye Saxby found Avery Hoggard on a 10 yard pass for the 21-7 lead that carried into halftime. Hoggard added a pick six to secure the win for Hertford County.
  • (7) Salisbury 45, (10) Mount Pleasant 7 - Vance Honeycutt's 51 yard rushing touchdown put Salisbury up 12-0 midway through the first quarter. The Hornets led 31-0 at halftime.
  • (2) Washington 35, (15) Nash Central 20 - The Pam Pack got it done in the first round behind a big performance from Jayden Turner. He had 21 carried for 204 yards and three touchdowns. Antwone Godley added two scores for Washington in the win.

2AA West: First Round

  • (1) Shelby 56, (16) West Iredell 7 - Kamarde Huskey and Donye Fuller each had two first half touchdowns in the blowout opening round win. Torrian Arrington added a pick six just before the half for the 42-0 lead. The Golden Lions are the defending 2AA champs and proved in the first round that they are the team to beat this season as well.
  • (8) Maiden 56, (9) North Surry 41 - This game was close through the first half, but Maiden was able to break away late. The Blue Devils led 29-21 at halftime. North Surry scored first out of the break, but Maiden answered and rolled to the 56-41 win.
  • (5) Ashe County 6, (12) West Lincoln 48 - West Lincoln recovered an Ashe County fumble on the first drive and converted it for a touchdown. The Rebels led 21-0 at the end of the first and added a pick six to open the second quarter. They held Ashe County scoreless until the games final two minutes.
  • (13) South Point 42, (4) Smoky Mountain 35 - South Point narrowly lead at halftime, 21-14. Naseem Jones added a score for South Point to open the second half and put the Red Raiders up 27-14 and then Will Rhinehart found Ray Rose to further the lead. As soon as Smoky Mountain would score, South Point would answer to keep the lead and hang on for the win.
  • (3) Hibriten 45, (14) Wilkes Central 26 - Taylib Howell got the Panthers on the board early with a 9 yard rushing touchdown. Wilkes Central scored twice and went for two both times, both tries were unsuccessful and they trailed 17-12 at halftime. Daren Perry added multiple second half touchdowns in an explosive second half.
  • (6) Burns 42, (11) East Lincoln 20 - East Lincoln led early, but Burns quickly overtook the Mustangs. The Bulldogs scored 42 straight points as they rolled to the big win.
  • (7) Pisgah 35, (10) Bunker Hill 14 - Bunker Hill picked up a loose ball on a Pisgah fumble and took it 5 yards for the score. Pisgah took a 20-14 lead in the third quarter and scored 15 straight points to cruise to the win.
  • (2) North Lincoln 54, (15) R-S Central 19 - North Lincoln led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. Ty Williams scored a 17 yard Rushing TD to give the Knights a 21-6 lead. Landon Beard found Seth Whitley on a 29 yard hook up to go up 27-6.
