The police said two Afghan men, Mohammad Akbar, 45, and Neda Mohammad, 38, were arrested from the cold storage plant they raided on Monday and claimed that the foreign nationals were “connected” with the two other Afghan nationals arrested along with three Indian men from south Delhi last week.

Five days after the Delhi Police seized 150 kilograms of heroin from five men, including two Afghanistan, and claimed it to be their biggest drug haul ever, they made another seizure of 50kg heroin from a cold storage plant in Haryana’s Kundli, Sonepat district.

They said the two groups of drug traffickers were interconnected and probably associated with the same international syndicate operating from Kandhar, Helmand and Jalalabad in Afghanistan, even though their modus operandi was different.

The seized heroin were stuffed in small poly-pouches, which were concealed in double layered cartons used for importing raisins though Attari-Wagah border (India-Pakistan) in trucks by a legal export company based in Kandhar.

The police have estimated that the total value of the seized 50kg heroin is around 200 crore in the international market. The price of heroin in the international market varies between 40 lakh and 80 lakh per kg, according to various global watchdogs, including bodies linked with the United Nations.

Deputy commissioner of police (special cell) Manishi Chandra said that the fresh seizure of heroin and arrests were made after the interrogation of Shinwari Rehmat Gul,30, and Akhtar Mohammad Shinwari,31, who were caught from a narcotic drugs processing unit, which was busted last week in Delhi’s Zakir Nagar.

“Gul’s interrogation led us to the cold storage plant in Kundli in Haryana’s Sonepat, which we raided and arrested Akbar and Mohammad with 102 cartons of raisins in which heroin was hidden,” DCP Chandra said.

“These marked cartons were interspersed with a consignment of over 600 cartons had arrived in India from the Attari-Wagah border check post in March this year. The point of loading was Kandahar,” he added.

According to Chandra, these cartons had raisins, and its exporter was in Kandhar and the importer was a firm based in Delhi’s Tilak Nagar (name withheld). When these cartons were examined, the police were recovered a total of 204 poly-pouches, each containing around 250 grams of heroin, the DCP said.

According to Chandra, Akbar revealed during interrogation that he was the proprietor of the export firm in Afghanistan and had been in this trade for more than three years.

On Friday, the police had claimed to have seized 150 kilograms of heroin and arrested five men involved in an intricate smuggling racket.
