Panjab University to be vehicle-free from tomorrow

In order to bring about a change, parking slots have been created near gate number 1 and 2. Besides, free shuttle buses and e-rickshaw facility, costing ₹10 per ride, will be also available.

Panjab University (PU) in its initiative to make campus a student-friendly place and a vehicle-free zone, will be restricting the entry of vehicles at various academic areas from Friday onwards.

Giving details, registrar Colonel GS Chadha (retd) said, “The experimental effort will be fully and strictly implemented from the 2018-19 academic session.”

Addressing the media, he said, “Restricted vehicles will be allowed only after the installation of wicket gates and PU official stickers. Vehicles of the faculty members and other non-teaching staff members will be allowed if they have stickers on it.”

In order to bring about a change, parking slots have been created near gate number 1 and 2. Besides, free shuttle buses and e-rickshaw facility, costing 10 per ride, will be also available.

As per the sources, the varsity will increase the frequency of shuttle bus service. Currently, the varsity has five buses. Out of which, 2 have phased out.

A proposal for cycle dock stations is under review, said the sources.

Chief of university security (CUS) Ashwani Koul informed that as many as 55 cameras will be installed on and around the gates. Taxis and auto rickshaws will not be allowed at the academic areas. Pick and drop points for taxis will also be stopped.

“Due to less manpower, the security personnel from various departments will be pooled in on rotation for manning the wicket gates,” he said.  

Meanwhile, the registrar informed that efforts are being made for getting permission from UT administration for widening the gate of Sector 25 side so as to create a flyover/underpass from Sector 14 to 25 campus. “The university is also seeking permission from UT to open the permanently closed gate near three-year law department, which was closed post 1984, to ease out the traffic congestion,” added the registrar.

 As per the information, taxis will be allowed inside the campus only to drop the baggage of the students. Senior members of the faculty and teachers, who wear sarees on daily basis, will be allowed to drive at and nearby academic areas. 

Dean student welfare (men) Emanual Nahar and dean student welfare (women) Neena Capalash were also present during the press briefing. The guidelines for students, faculty and visitors will be available on the website.
