Jake Doyle-Hayes is said to be interesting a number of League One clubs ahead of a potential January transfer window loan move away from Aston Villa – and Sunderland have to be one of those sides.

HITC Sport reported earlier this week that the 19-year-old was on the shortlist of many League One clubs with less than three weeks until the January window kicks in.

The Villa academy product has struggled to break into the Villa side under both Steve Bruce and new manager Dean Smith, managing only one appearance in the Carabao Cup during the 1-0 win over Yeovil Town.

A regular in the club’s Under-23 side, Doyle-Hayes has played three times in the senior side but with the likes of John McGinn, Glenn Whelan, Mile Jedinak, Conor Hourihane and Henri Lansbury ahead of him, a loan is the best move.

With plenty of League One clubs after his signature, Sunderland have to throw their hat into the ring to lure the midfielder to the Stadium of Light in the January window.

Sunderland remain in the hunt for an instant return to the Championship after suffering relegation last season. They sit in third, seven points behind leaders Portsmouth (47 points), and Luton (41 points). They have to games in hand, though.

Jack Ross’ has lots of quality at his disposal but with the second half of the season likely to bring injuries and suspensions to the fore, cover all over the park is needed in January if they are to maintain a promotion push.

Doyle-Hayes’ creativity, passing and technical abilities would make him a top addition for any League One clubs and indeed some others in the Championship – and he would certainly boost Sunderland’s hunt for the second tier.

Landing the youngster on loan would give another top option to Ross, who has seen his side lose just one match in League One so far.
