Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Remi Matthews has spoken out about his decision to leave Norwich City permanently in January and how he feels it has reaped dividends.

As reported in the Bolton News, the 25-year-old found himself stuck in limbo during the transfer window when a registration embargo at Bolton forced him to return unexpectedly to the Canaries.

At that point, Matthews had the choice of staying at Carrow Road for the remainder of his contract or heading out elsewhere on loan, but eventually he made the permanent switch to the University of Bolton Stadium.

First-choice goalkeeper Ben Alnwick is currently sidelined with a knee injury so the ex-Canaries man was drafted into the starting XI and is in line for his seventh consecutive start for Saturday’s Championship trip to Leeds United.

Indeed, Matthews has shown his class during this first-team run when he put in a man-of-the-match display against his former club last weekend, despite the Trotters being beaten 4-0 by Daniel Farke’s side.

Speaking to the Bolton News ahead of the trip to Elland Road, Matthews said: “I could have stayed there when I went back in January but I wanted to come back to this football club and push to play regularly.

“I think you can only go out on loan so many times before you get to the stage where you say: ‘Am I really going to have a chance here?’ It was a tough decision and probably one of the toughest things I have had to do… however, I have no regrets towards the decision I made.”

According to Transfermarkt, Matthews has made 10 appearances overall for Bolton so far, keeping two clean sheets, while he notched up 38 games for Norwich’s Under-23s but none for their senior squad.
