Wolves defender Matt Doherty has admitted that he has got himself ‘a lot fitter’ after struggling to perform at the start of the season.

The 27-year-old star is enjoying a successful campaign at Molineux and he has put that down to being much fitter, adapting to certain situations and confidence.

Before the international break, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side booked their place in the semi-final of the FA Cup by beating Manchester United on home soil.

Speaking ahead of the Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2020 qualifiers, Doherty spoke about what is behind his own success this season as he admitted that he struggled to get started.

“I just think that I am good enough [in regards to why I am having a good season],” said Doherty, as posted by Off The Ball. “I guess at the start, I didn’t start the season too well. I’ve got myself a lot fitter even though I was pretty fit last season.

“I think I have been able to adapt. Confidence is everything. I am super confident, at the moment. Every time I got out to play, I feel great when I am playing – I’m playing better than I am now.”

ROI begin their Euro 2020 campaign with an away trip to Gibraltar on Saturday before they host Georgia on home soil three days later – Doherty will be hoping to start in both of those matches.

More than likely the Wolves wing-back will be competing with Everton’s Seamus Coleman for that right-back spot, with the latter the more experienced out of the duo.

But on the domestic scene, there is no doubt that Doherty has had the better campaign, with his team currently sitting seventh in the Premier League table.

Over the course of the season, Doherty has played 36 matches in all competitions for Nuno’s side, scoring six goals and supplying his teammates with eight assists [transfermarkt].
