Both Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United had a player each in Scotland’s latest squad.
Some Sheffield Wednesday fans are mocking rivals Sheffield United on Twitter.
United may be 19 points clear of Wednesday and seemingly bound for the Premier League, but it’s the Owls who (in a way) have the bragging rights where Thursday’s internationals are concerned.
Both clubs had a player each called up by Scotland manager Alex McLeish, but despite having featured in previous squads Blades midfielder John Fleck lost out to Wednesday right-back and international new boy Liam Palmer in the race for a first senior cap.
Many of a Sheffield United persuasion cannot believe that Fleck, arguably one of theirs and the Championship’s standout performers this season, wasn’t called upon as Scotland fell to a 3-0 defeat in Kazakhstan.
And this is what their Sheffield Wednesday counterparts are saying in response…
Of course, Palmer’s Scotland debut wasn’t one to remember, although the Owls academy product wasn’t directly involved in any of the goals conceded by his side.
That said, his performance appears to have left plenty to be desired – with the Times newspaper giving him a three-out-of-10 rating and suggesting he might never play again for the Tartan Army.
Will the Sheffield United or Sheffield Wednesday man win the most Scotland caps?
