Aston Villa are edging closer and closer to guaranteeing a Championship playoff place after beating Bristol City 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon.

Villa went into the game having won seven in a row, but they were without two key players, with defender Tyrone Mings suspended and playmaker Jack Grealish ill.

Some may have worried that the stunning run of wins would be coming to an end, but Dean Smith’s men pulled through with a 2-1 win over a dangerous Robins side.

Tammy Abraham’s second half penalty put Villa in front, and midfielder Conor Hourihane grabbed a second to put Villa in cruise control.

Famara Diedhiou’s goal set up nervy finish, but it proved to be a consolation for City as Villa racked up an eighth win in a row to tighten their grip on a playoff place.

Smith and co are all but guaranteed a top six finish now, barring a late collapse, and they will be looking to make it nine wins in a row away at Bolton Wanderers on Friday.

They will have Mings and Grealish back for that game, and both players took to Twitter to react to Saturday’s win having missed out, with the duo praising the win whilst Mings praised goalscorers Abraham and Hourihane.
