Aston Villa celebrated a ninth consecutive Championship win – matching an achievement previously set in 1910 – in their Good Friday game away at Bolton Wanderers as their 2-0 triumph further consolidated their playoff finish hopes.

The first half saw the visitors enjoy proceedings as Anwar El Ghazi shot wide from Jack Grealish’s cross, while John McGinn had an effort cleared off the line by Harry Brockbank.

Bolton then lost both captain David Wheater and veteran midfielder Gary O’Neil to injury before the break but despite this Villa could not breach their back line.

However, Dean Smith’s charges succeeded in taking the lead two minutes into the second half when Tammy Abraham crossed to the far post for Grealish to head home.

Just 10 minutes later it was the captain and hometown hero to provide the assist for his prolific teammate to score with a header of his own, Bolton unable to muster a response as their relegation to League One was confirmed.

At the back, Tyrone Mings was once again part of a solid defensive display which yielded yet another clean sheet, and he took to Twitter on Friday evening to give his thoughts on the game:

Here is how some of the Villa faithful reacted to the centre-back’s tweet – needless to say there’s a lot of love for the Bournemouth loanee and yet more calls for him to permanently commit to the claret and blue:
