The Rams ace reaggravated a left quadriceps strain which he suffered prior to the end of the Championship season.
Derby County midfielder Duane Holmes has posted a series of messages on Twitter following his unfortunate withdrawal from the United States’ Gold Cup squad due to injury.
The 24-year-old, who only made his debut for the US earlier this month in their 1-0 friendly defeat against Venezuela, will return to the Rams for treatment, the Championship club wrote in a statement.
US Soccer, meanwhile, put out a statement of their own in which they said that Holmes reaggravated a left quadriceps strain which he suffered prior to the end of the league season with Derby.
Holmes, who joined the East Midlands club from Scunthorpe United last summer, featured plentifully in the second half of the Championship season, making 27 appearances in the league and playoffs, according to Transfermarkt.
The twice-capped player, whose USMNT call-up was the first of his career, scored two goals and claimed four assists for Derby in all competitions, while his overall appearance tally in 2018-19 stood at 33 (Transfermarkt).
Here is what Holmes wrote on Twitter following the bad news:
Some Rams fans took to the social media platform to console their player:
The Gold Cup, which starts on 15 June, will see the United States take on Panama, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana – whose manager Michael Johnson is also Derby’s club ambassador – in the group stages.
