Given how one-time Liverpool hero Luis Suarez ended up upsetting quite a few Reds fans during the Champions League semi-final between his old club and Barcelona, it’s not surprising that his latest comments have been music to the ears of some Kopites.

The Uruguayan is arguably one of the finest Liverpool strikers in recent history, having made 133 appearances for the Anfield side, scoring 82 goals and registering 47 assists, according to Transfermarkt.

However, his relationship with their fanbase was strained during the tie with his Barcelona side, in which he celebrated his first-leg goal against the Reds passionately, before being involved in a clash with Andy Robertson in the second leg (The Mirror).

Liverpool had the last laugh as Robertson’s replacement in the game, Georginio Wijnaldum, scored a brace in what ended up being one of the great European comebacks of all time, overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit to triumph 4-0 in the second leg and 4-3 on aggregate (BBC Sport).

“The days after back in Barcelona were the worst moments of my life and career along with the 2014 World Cup, I wanted to disappear from the world,” Suarez told Fox Sports. “I didn’t see [us losing] because we are Barcelona and we thought we’d have two or three chances to score; we said this but we became nervous, we gave stupid passes away, we didn’t show the right attitude.

“When the first goal came we didn’t know how to react, we knew we had really messed up. After the game in the dressing room no-one could say anything; there was sadness, bitterness and disappointment because we knew we’d given an awful image.”

Here is how some Liverpool fans on Twitter reacted to Suarez’s comments:

The Reds subsequently overcame Tottenham Hotspur – who had enjoyed a historic semi-final comeback of their own against Ajax – in the final at Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium to lift their sixth European Cup.
