The Canaries, under Daniel Farke’s guidance, won the Championship title last season and Carrow Road is preparing for life in the Premier League.
Norwich City ex-player Dean Ashton has given his opinion on what approach he expects the Canaries to take in the summer transfer window as they prepare for life back in the Premier League (Eastern Daily Press).
Under the management of Daniel Farke, the East Anglians won the Championship title, coming out on top in what turned out to be a hotly-contested three-horse race between themselves, Sheffield United and Leeds United.
With a mix of shrewd acquisitions in the summer of 2018 like Teemu Pukki, Tim Krul and Emiliano Buendia plus academy graduates like Ben Godfrey, Max Aarons and Jamal Lewis supplementing the established players, Norwich had a great balance in the squad and it reaped dividends on the pitch.
However, life in the Premier League is much tougher than in the Championship and as such, the temptation to splash the cash on players in a bid to inject quality in a team and ultimately survive in the top flight is always going to be there, but as seen with Fulham and their squad overhaul last summer, it doesn’t always guarantee success.
Ashton, who was Norwich in 2005 and 2006, is however confident that the Canaries will not panic, will continue to make sensible, shrewd acquisitions, and even though he expects over teams to cast an eye over some of their players, will also believe their scouts will also be doing their job in case outgoings do come about.
“They are not going to go out and spend a lot of money,” Ashton is quoted by the Eastern Daily Press as saying. “They have brought in this model for a reason and if the worst came to the worst and they were relegated they still keep the nucleus of the playing squad and financially they are not in a situation where they will get into difficulties.
“There is no doubt other teams will be looking at their younger players but, equally, I am sure the scouting system at Norwich will be looking at players well in advance they could bring in. I personally think there is a case for some experience but they will not want to upset what they had last season. That was fantastic, in the way they got a group of players and staff together, and they need to take that into the Premier League.”
