Newcastle United’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson watched Marrony in Brazil but is he on his way to the Premier League?

Newcastle United could make a move for Vasco da Gama striker Marrony, according to Globo Esporte, after the club’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson travelled to Brazil to watch the youngster in the flesh.

Six goals in 32 games is not exactly a remarkable goal-scoring record but Marrony’s potential is clear for all to see.

At just 20, he is already the star man of a Vasco da Gama side struggling at the wrong end of the Brazilian Serie A table and all the signs suggest that he’ll be following the likes of Vinicius Jr and Gabriel Martinelli to Europe very soon.

Globo Esporte claim that Newcastle’s transfer chief Nickson is keeping very close tabs on the youngster and Newcastle are now expected to make a bid in the coming days.

It is likely to fall short of the £31 million release-clause in Marrony’s contract, however.

And while the Rio-born forward is unlikely to be an immediate replacement for Salomon Rondon or Ayoze Perez, he is a sign that Newcastle are planning for the future under Steve Bruce.

Young, promising and with plenty of potential re-sale value, the fact that Marrony is the type of signing owner Mike Ashley loves also won’t go unnoticed amongst the understandably suspicious Newcastle United fanbase.
