The Rangers manager Steven Gerrard was asked about the Ibrox goalkeeper’s future on Friday.
The Rangers manager Steven Gerrard wants to keep Allan McGregor at Ibrox for as long as the goalkeeper continues to perform.
McGregor has proved to be one of Gerrard’s best Rangers signings but is out of contract in 10 months’ time – at which point he will be 38 years old.
Asked how long he thinks the Scot can keep up his form, and whether there have been talks about a new deal, Gerrard said via Rangers’ official Youtube channel: “I think that’s a question you should ask Allan McGregor.
“He’s the one who goes out there and does the work. He’s the only one who can tell you how his body is feeling and what shape he’s in. On the eye, looking at him on a daily basis, he looks in good shape, he looks in good form. He’s happy, he’s enjoying his football.
“If that continues, of course, we’d want him around for longer than his contract suggests. But there also might be something in the contract that if he plays a certain amount of games something might kick in anyway.”
Asked if he has heard anything from McGregor’s camp about wanting to extend his second spell at Rangers, Gerrard replied: “No. But I haven’t had anything to suggest he wants to leave either, or he’ll want to retire.
“So the longer he stays in good form I’m pretty happy having Allan by my side.”
On whether McGregor is close to triggering any clause in his contract, the 39-year-old said, smiling: “Only he knows what’s in his contract. But most of them do push for this type of stuff in their contracts.”
McGregor is one of nine Rangers players whose contracts expire next summer, along with Wes Foderingham, Andy Firth, Jon Flanagan, Andy Halliday, Steven Davis, Graham Dorrans, Jason Holt and Joe Dodoo.
