Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles (BBBSLA) has added The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation president Trisha Cardoso as an Excellence in Mentoring Award honoree for its annual Accessories for Success Scholarship Luncheon.
The event, to be emceed by board member and Big Sister Kim Baldonado, will be held May 5 at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills. Prior to the luncheon, luxury boutique vendors will feature unique accessories and gifts for purchase with a portion of the proceeds donated to BBBSLA.
Additional honorees include Mike Daly, producer-songwriter and executive director of A&R and music publishing at Disney Music Group with the Excellence in Mentoring Award.
“We have seen Trisha and Mike champion so many brilliant young minds, both personally and through their advocacy for our mentoring programs,” BBBSLA CEO Olivia Diaz-Lapham told The Hollywood Reporter. “It is because of people like Trisha Cardoso and Mike Daly that we are able to inspire, ignite, empower and defend potential in the youth of Los Angeles.”
In addition to being the president and chief giving officer at The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation (TCLFF) Excellence in Mentoring Award honoree, Cardoso has an extensive record in philanthropy and serves on multiple boards, including Young Eisner Scholars and UNICEF. In November 2016, she received the Lenny Somberg Award from the Saban Community Clinic for her 20 years of volunteer service.
”I am so grateful for the opportunity to shine the light on the power of mentorship,” said Cardoso. “Over four years ago, I was introduced to the amazing work of BBBSLA through The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment mentorship program, which provides comprehensive, four-year, LMU scholarships to deserving high school senior ‘Little Sisters’ — many of whom are the first in their families to attend college. As a first-generation college graduate myself, I immediately related to these young women and to their dreams of wanting to change family patterns through education. Everyone deserves an equal playing field, and I applaud the Big and Little, Brothers and Sisters for their commitment to doing just that.”
The annual fashion show, featuring Big Brothers and Sisters (“Bigs”) with their Little Brothers and Sisters (“Littles”) is being sponsored by Nordstrom Rack. The “Big” and “Little” pairings will have time prior to the event to select outfits and accessories to model on the catwalk. The partnership between BBBS and Nordstrom Rack holds strong to the belief that every little moment with a caring adult can be a catalyst for positive change in a young person’s life.
From now through May 13, shoppers at Nordstrom Rack stores across the nation can buy a Sponsor-A-Moment tag and make contributions at the register, and 100 percent of the proceeds will support matching kids with adult mentors. In addition to supporting a mentorship moment between a Big and Little, the funds raised will also allow mentors help young people with skills such as preparing for an interview, learning to tie a tie and helping with homework. A highlight of the event will include a raffle of five $200 Nordstrom Rack gift cards.
Excellence in Mentoring Award recipient Daly is celebrating his ninth match anniversary with his “Little Brother” Jonathan at BBBSLA. As a board member, Daly helps create opportunities for the more than 1,700 children the organization serves throughout Los Angeles.
“For the past nine years, my life has been enriched by my dear friend and little brother, Jonathan,” said Daly. “Receiving this award for our work together is truly humbling. It’s an honor that I share with Jonathan, the incredible men and women of BBBSLA, as well as my fellow Big Brothers and Big Sisters; whose commitment to the youth of our city is nothing short of inspiring. As Winston Churchill once said, ‘We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.’”
