Ruth Bader Ginsburg — the subject of the new biopic On the Basis of Sex — showed up Tuesday night to the film’s Washington, D.C., premiere, where she effectively upstaged the star-studded cast that includes Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer and Justin Theroux.
The 85-year-old U.S. Supreme Court justice posed for a photo with a Chanel-clad Jones — who plays RBG in the movie — and then with Hammer, who plays her late husband, Martin Ginsburg, and Justin Theroux, who plays former ACLU legal director Melvin Wulf.
Theroux and Hammer seemed eager to post their snaps with Ginsburg on social media. “New couple alert,” Theroux joked in his Instagram caption, while Hammer wrote alongside his post, “And then this happened!”
Hammer later commented on Theroux’s photo with Ginsburg, warning, “Back off…she’s spoken for!” Their playful Instagram banter took place hours after the duo went sightseeing in the nation’s capital, documenting their trips to the Washington Monument and Capitol Hill, among other historical sites, in each of their Instagram stories. In one snap, they labeled the White House as “Putin’s house.”
After On the Basis of Sex‘s D.C. screening, the cast participated in a Q&A, during which Ginsburg was seen laughing and smiling throughout. An onlooker said she “was very happy” at the premiere and “really enjoyed” the film.
Ginsburg’s appearance at the screening comes just more than a month after she was hospitalized following a fall in her office at the court, during which she fractured three ribs. The injury had a slight impact on the promotion of On the Basis of Sex, as the beloved judge — who was also the subject of the critically acclaimed documentary RBG, released earlier this year — was set to participate in several screenings and panels ahead of Tuesday night’s event.
On the Basis of Sex follows a young Ginsburg — who currently leads the liberal wing of the Supreme Court — and her husband working together to bring a groundbreaking case before the U.S. Court of Appeals and overturn a century of gender discrimination against women.
The film is set to hit theaters Dec. 25.
