The University of Maryland in College Park will offer a hybrid of in-person and online classes this fall to reduce the likelihood of a coronavirus outbreak.

The university system announced on May 29 that classes that require an art studio or lab will be held in person, but others that focus more on class discussion will move online. Some classes may include a mix of students in-person and others watching online.

Social distancing measures will also be in place in non-class areas, with reduced density in student housing, limits on kitchens and community areas and more grab-and-go food options.

That changes could mean that more students from places like Silver Spring will choose to continue living at home, a throwback to the college’s old reputation as a commuter school.

College Park eateries that rely on large groups of students may need to adjust their business models to offer more take-out and delivery. But some, like Insomnia Cookies, which delivers fresh cookies directly to students, might do even better.
