Mata Rani VS Guruji: 7 Differences Between West Delhi & South Delhi Aunties

Mata Rani VS Guruji: 7 Differences Between West Delhi & South Delhi Aunties

Although parts of the same Union Territory (UT), Delhi is divided by the name of their furthest corners. While North and East Delhi do come up in conversations, South and West Delhi are amongst the most discussed regions of the UT.

Going by the stereotype of the West Delhi and South Delhi aunties, we came up with possible differences that the two have. These differences assured us that the two are separate entities altogether, reminding us of the famous line from a poem by Rudyard Kipling, “The Ballad of East and West”-- “East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet.”

1. Snacks served to guests:

West Delhi aunties: Samosa, Coca Cola, bread pakora and chai.

South Delhi aunties: Homemade hummus with pita bread, bite-sized quiches from a bakery they discovered in Khan Market, wine, and Moroccon mint tea.

2. Family vacation to a foreign country:

West Delhi aunties: Will pack snacks, their suits and sarees for important occasions (like dinner), will widen their eyes every time their kid wants something, and buy a tracksuit from Juicy Couture which has “Juicy” written over the ass with all the rhinestones in the world.

South Delhi aunties: Will explore all authentic eateries and take their wine tasting very seriously, buy the latest collection of Louis Vitton, and give their kids 100 dollars every day so they don’t trouble them.

3. Home decor:

West Delhi aunties: Will have their houses filled with every ornament they could find in every market they ever visited. They use all the Diwali gifts (like decorative pieces) around the house. Will have pink walls and blue curtains and black bed linen, and feel like an interior designer.

South Delhi aunties: They have a minimal set up with only the most eye-catching and expensive centerpieces. They have a colour theme for the entire house ranging from shades of white to shades of beige. Their bed linen is coordinated and is mostly ivories and beiges.

4. Get-togethers:

West Delhi aunties: Basically kitty-parties with tambola, choreographed dances, and plans to have a picnic next time.

South Delhi aunties: Basically kitty-parties with a show of wealth and their biggest solitaires, playing cards poolside at 5-Star hotels while sipping on wine. Not to forget the juicy gossip that follows on who’s sleeping with whom.

5. Expensive makeup brands:

West Delhi aunties: They invest in brands like M.A.C and Sephora because that is all they know and believe to be expensive.

South Delhi aunties: Chanel, Estee Lauder, Mary Kay, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior, Givenchy, Bobbi Brown, and everything you might find on the ‘most expensive makeup brands in the world’ list.

6. Kirtan shopping:

West Delhi aunties: All aunties take their kirtan outfits very seriously, but West Delhi aunties take their outfits from Frontier Raas and Chhabra 555.

South Delhi aunties: They love their small boutiques for quick outfits if they can’t fit into their last season Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla sharara.

7. Dealing with kids:

West Delhi aunties: Constant nagging and backhand comments, with a backhand thappad is an everyday affair in a West Delhi kid’s life. From restrictions on drinking and staying out late at night to being made privy to all the gossip when people visit.

South Delhi aunties: Kids are “reprimanded” for misbehaving by taking away their spending power or being asked to cancel a party. Parents love to flaunt their brilliantly brought up kids to people and everyone has a stimulating conversations “together” over glasses of scotch and the finest of wines.
