Two men have been arrested after a car drove into a tent on a campsite in north Wales, injuring four campers, police said.

One of the campers, a woman, suffered critical injuries and is fighting for her life after the overnight incident at the Rhyd y Galen campsite near Caernarfon.

Detective Chief Inspector Sion Williams said: “This was a terrifying event for people who should have felt safe in their tents.

North Wales Police are supporting those involved and our thoughts are with the family of the woman who has been seriously injured.

“I would like to thank those members of the public who have helped us, but if anyone has not been spoken to yet and has any information which could assist, then please contact us.

“Our Roads Policing Unit is working with detectives to establish exactly what happened.”

A spokesperson for the Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed receiving calls about a collision between a vehicle and a tent overnight.

“We were called on Monday 19 August at approximately 2.02am to reports of a collision between a vehicle and a tent in Caernarfon,” the service said in a statement.

“We responded with two emergency ambulances.”

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said two fire engines were sent to the scene after a car was driven into two tents.

One casualty was left trapped in the collision and was freed by police officers before being taken to hospital.
