UK weather: The latest Met Office forecast

Britain is set for a dry and bright start to the week with frequent sunny spells, the Met Office has said.

High pressure will build over the UK and Ireland through the coming week bringing increasingly mild, dry and settled weather, with temperatures expected to remain around 9C to 11C.

It comes after parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland were hit with heavy downpours and coastal gales over the weekend.

Last week, some areas of the UK saw a month’s worth of rain in the space of just 24 hours.

One of the worst affected areas, Capel Curig in Caernarfonshire, Wales, saw 136.6mm of rainfall over the course of one day, according to Natural Resources Wales (NRW).

This week, Sunday will see heavy showers and coastal gales across Scotland with showers spreading into Northern Ireland and northern England later. But southern areas will experience dry weather with some sunny spells.

Met Office spokesman Matthew Box said that the blustery weather across Scotland and the north will peter out by the start of next week.

He told The Independent: “The general picture across the UK is that high pressure will bring an increasing amount of dry, settled weather over the coming week.

“Tuesday and Wednesday may be rather cloudy in Scotland and Northern England, but with some sunshine.

“Temperatures will remain average for this time of year, occasionally a degree or two above.

“But there is a risk of some overnight fog and frost.

“There are likely to be plenty of dry, sunny spells, particularly across the south and east.

“But the high pressure may bring strong winds to northern areas by the end of the week.”
