Sikkim is a beautiful state in the north-eastern part of India. It is a landlocked state with immense natural beauty, bordered by Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. Boasting of a dramatic landscape, a good part of the Himalayas with some of the highest peaks are at the heart of Sikkim. Here’s what you must not miss if you’re visiting this place in April and May.
Yuksom
Yuksom is an old historic town, known for gems like Norbugang Park and Dubdi Gompa. Located in West Sikkim, Yuksom is abundant in natural beauty, sweeping vistas and uninterrupted trail for trekkers. If you are looking to spending some quiet moments in the lap of nature, this place is highly recommended.
Nathu La Pass
The best way to explore to the stunning Nathu La Pass is by Yak safari. Located in the Himalayas, the Pass connects India with China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. Perched at an altitude of 4,310m above sea level, this off-shoot of the ancient Silk Road can be covered on a day trip from Gangtok.
Lachung, Lachen and Yumthang Valley
While Lachung and Lachen are high altitude villages in North Sikkim and winter homes for the Bhutia and Tibetan nomadic tribes, Yumthang is a beautiful valley bounded by snow-capped mountains. All three are extremely beautiful places in Sikkim. If you had to pick one attraction here, go for the Lachung Gompa, where the largest Buddhist shrine is located.
Ravangla
Located between Gangtok and Pelling, Ravangla is a quaint town that affords gorgeous views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Pandim, Mt. Siniolchu, and Mt. Kabru. During the months of April and May the place is dotted with flowers including orchids and rhododendrons.
Namchi
Namchi means ‘sky high’ in Sikkimese, an apt name for the place, courtesy the beautiful sight of the Khangchendzonga Range. From sweeping tea gardens to the giant statue of Guru Padmasambhava on Samdruptse Hill, there’s much to do here.
Gangtok
Being the capital of Sikkim, Gangtok is home to loads of gems such as the Enchey Monastery and Jhakri Falls. You’ll be awestruck by the endless walking trails, gorgeous silver-fir trees and the warm hospitality by the locals here. Make sure to spend your evenings at the Mall Road, and indulge in food and shopping.
Pelling
Pelling is a hill town and home to lush forests and diverse wildlife. Apart from the uninterrupted views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, you must watch out for the late 17th-century Buddhist Sanga Choling Monastery. Since it is a small town, you can easily discover most of it on foot.
