Kanpur is the industrial hub of Uttar Pradesh, but also has a massive historical and cultural significance as well. Located along the  banks of the Ganges river, Kanpur is one of the main centres where the industrial revolution began in India. It was on the riverside steps of Massacre Ghat that the 1857 massacre took place during a rebellion against the British rule.

Today, however, one of the largest city in Uttar Pradesh is home to many things that you can see and experience as an avid traveller. You can explore Bithoor – a small town in Kanpur, that is home various tourist spots like the Valmiki Ashram, Brahmavart Ghat, Patthar Ghat, Dhruva Teela, and Siddhidham Ashram. This is also where the famous battle of the Seige of Cawnpore had happened.

Kanpur is also home to some of the most beautiful gardens and parks. You can head to any of these for a nice, relaxed evening. Among the most well-maintained ones are Phool Bagh, Nana Rao Park, Kanpur Zoological Park, Japani Garden and Mahatma Gandhi Park. Phool Bagh, as the name suggests, is where you’ll find countless colourful flowers all year round. Another attraction to watch out for is in Nana Rao Park called the Boodha Bargad. It used to be an old banyan where Indian revolutionaries were hanged during 1857. Now, it’s been converted into a memorial of immense historic importance.

Among the temples, Shri Radhakrishna Temple is definitely worth a visit. It houses five shrines dedicated to the various Hindu deities, and is a marvellous example of Neo-Hindu architecture built with carved white marble. Another one is the Jain Glass Temple, located in Maheshwari Mohal and adorned with intricate cut-glass in an elaborately designed structure. The glass murals both on the inside and outside of the temple narrate the Jain philosophy of Lord Mahavira and the 23 teerthankaras.

Jajmau, is an ancient region in Kanpur where most of the genuine leather is made in the many tanneries situated here. A visit to the tanneries will give you a great insight into how they’ve been working for many, many years now.
