Silvassa, the capital of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, is a vibrant and beautiful city that makes for a great weekend getaway from Mumbai or Pune. It lies a little over three hours or 166 km from Mumbai, and it has plenty to offer to any traveler. One of the highlights of the place is the incredible Swaminarayan Temple. A popular place of pilgrimage, especially for the people of neighboring Gujarat, the temple’s charm lies in the fact that it is a replica of the sprawling Swaminarayan Akshardham complex in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Recently, traveling duo Hardik and Dr. Shruti Vaidya decided to head to the iconic temple. Before it was the capital of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Silvassa was a gorgeous Portuguese colony. Today, the city is an industrial hub but still boasts of plenty of sights to see and things to do, like the Silvassa Vasona Lion Safari that forms part of the larger Dadra & Nagar Haveli Wildlife sanctuary. There are also water sports activities on the Madhuban reservoir. The capital city includes 72 villages, and was under the Maratha Empire until it was offered to the Portuguese as part of a peace treaty in 1779. NOW READ: Mumbai to Silvassa: How to reach Silvassa from Mumbai by road
