When you think the most developed island in the Lakshadweep, the name that pops up is Kavaratti Island. Infact, it’s the world’s most spectacular tropical island and for good reason. The beautiful lagoon, about 400km off the coast of Kerala offers everything from water sports, swimming to snorkelling and sunbathing along with being a surreal beauty.

Also, Kavaratti Island serves as the capital of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep and has the most pristine white sand beaches. If you’re an adventure junkie, you’re in for a treat because you name the sport and chances are they have it on this island. From scuba diving, snorkelling, water skiing, parasailing, jet skiing, water bikes, to wind surfing and glass bottomed boats – these are the most famous water sports to try in Kavaratti Island.

An island is mostly known for its natural beauty; but Kavaratti has a few architectural heritage attractions as well. The island is said to be home to 52 odd mosques; out of which Urja Mosque, Ajara and Jamnath Mosque are definitely worth visiting. The Marine Aquarium has an excellent collection of marine animals as well, especially sharks.

The island is known for its sea-food and serves a variety of local dishes to the traveller. Dishes with fish and coconut are an integral park of Lakshadweep cuisine because you find both coconut and fish in abundance on the island. If you have to pick nearby islands that are worth a visit, go for Agatti, Kadmat and Bangaram Islands.

Kavaratti does not have an airport even though it is the capital of Lakshadweep. Agatti Island Airport is the nearest airport to Kavaratti Island. Kochi Airport is the nearest one in the Indian mainland. You can also opt for a ship voyage to Kavaratti from Kochi. There are separate passenger ships for locals and travellers and it’s an overnight journey from Kochi to Lakshadweep.
