532 kg heroin seizure case: Punjab cop kills self in lockup, he was posted in Attari

A senior Punjab police officer, Avatar Singh, posted as the station house officer in Attari sector, committed suicide by shooting self on Tuesday. He was under investigation on charges of aiding and abetting narcotics smuggling.

He was arrested by the special task force of the Punjab police on Monday night. Another SHO Zorawar Singh was also arrested in this connection.

Both Avatar Singh and Zorawar Singh were posted at the Gharinda police station in Attari sector. Heroine and other contraband substances were recovered from their possession.

Avatar Singh was lodged in a police lockup when he snatched an AK-47 rifle from a police officer on duty and shot himself in head. His name had cropped up in June 30 seizure of 532 kg of heroin at the Integrated Check Post at the Attari border.

Heroin was concealed in 15 gunny bags as part of a rock salt consignment that was coming from Pakistan. It was one of the all-time biggest seizures of narcotics.

Prime accused in that case, Gurpinder Singh, died in judicial custody on July 21 under unexplained circumstances. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh ordered a probe into the death of Gurpinder Singh.

While the Amritsar police have begun probe into the incident but another death in the case has complicated the matters. The police, according to the sources, were about to produce both Avatar Singh and Zorawar Singh in court.
