Chhattisgarh to rename its new capital in honour of late PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee

The government of Chhattisgarh will be honouring Atal Bihari Vaypayee by giving a national-level poetry award named after him.

Chhattisgarh's new capital Naya Raipur will be renamed as Atal Nagar in memory of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Chhattisgarh's chief minister, Raman Singh, announced the renaming of the smart city in a cabinet meeting held on August 21, 2018 in Raipur.

Other places to be renamed

  • The chief minister stated that along with Naya Raipur, other places will also be renamed after Atal Bihari Vajpayee such as the Bilaspur University, a newly-built medical college in Rajnandgaon, the Marwa Thermal Power Plant in Janjgir-Champa district, state capital expressway and the under-construction Central Park.
  • A statue of the former Prime Minister will be installed at the new capital Naya Raipur as well as in all 27 district headquarters of the state.
  • Raman Singh also said that the biography of Vaypayee will also be added in Chhattisgarh board of school education's textbooks.
  • The second phase of Raman Singh's 'Vikas Yatra' which is to be launched from the next month will now be called the 'Atal Vikas Yatra'.

Where is Naya Raipur, the new capital of Chhattisgarh?

Naya Raipur is located about 24 km southeast of Raipur and is India's sixth planned city after Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), Bhubaneswar (Odisha), Gandhi Nagar (Gujarat), Chandigarh (Punjab and Haryana), and Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra).

Chhattisgarh's foundation day to be celebrated

On Chhattisgarh foundation day, which is celebrated on November 1 every year, the government will give awards to panchayats and urban bodies for good governance.

The awards will be called 'Atal Sushashan Awards.'

The government of Chhattisgarh will also be honoring Atal Bihari Vaypayee by giving a national-level poetry award named after him.

Atal Bihari Vaypayee passed away on August 16, 2018.
