According to the the India Today-Axis My India Exit Poll prediction, the BJP is expected to make a clean sweep in Karnataka winning between 21 and 25 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka.

The exit poll predicts that the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) alliance will not be able to win more than 3-5 seats in Karnataka. It has forecast 0-1 seats for the others.
In 2014 Lok Sabha elections the BJP won 17 seats while the Congress won nine seats in Karnataka. The BJP and the Congress are in a direct contest in Karnataka.

The Congress and JD (S) had last year joined hands to form government in Karnataka after the combine managed to cross the halfway mark in the state assembly. Former Prime Minister and JD-S supremo HD Deve Gowda were prominent figures in this election. Deve Gowda's another grandson Nikhil Kumaraswamy, contested from Mandya, a seat traditionally held by the Congress but given to the JD-S in the seat-sharing exercise. He contested against independent candidate Sumalatha, widow of late actor-turned-politician Ambareesh.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the outgoing Lok Sabha MP from Gulbarga, and state Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda were among the prominent faces from Congress this election. Krishna Byre Gowda contested from Bangalore North against the BJP's union minister DV Sadananda Gowda.
