Priyanka Gandhi Vadra cancels Lucknow press meet, observes 2-min silence for Kashmir attack martyrs

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Jyotiraditya Scindia, both newly appointed general secretaries of the Congress party, cancelled a press conference they were to hold in Lucknow today. The press meet was cancelled in wake of the Kashmir terror attack in which several CRPF jawans were killed. The presser would have been Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's first since her brother and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi appointed her the party's general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh East. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's appointment comes months ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha elections during which the Congress party will be looking to revive its fortunes.

When Priyanka Gandhi Vadra joined politics

On January 23, 2019, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra officially joined politics, ending years of will-she-won't-she speculation. Until she became a Congress general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had largely stayed out of politics, at least publicly.

Her public political engagements were largely limited to participating in rallies organised in support of her brother, Rahul Gandhi, or mother Sonia Gandhi, both of whom are Members of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh. However, there was talk of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra being part of a high-level group within Congress that took all major party decisions.

The Congress maintained all along that joining politics was a decision for Priyanka to take. And this year, she took the big poll plunge.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi appointed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as a Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh East, where Varanasi, the constituency of PM Narendra Modi, is located.

Since assuming charge as a Congress general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has limited herself to closed-door meetings with party workers. She did take part in a roadshow the Congress organised in Lucknow this week but she did not speak.

Today's press conference is Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's first major press interaction since joining politics.
