Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Gyan Dev Ahuja has been booked for violating the model code of conduct by allegedly distributing money to his supporters during a rally before filing nomination papers as an independent candidate on Monday.

The action was taken after a video purportedly showing Ahuja distributing money went viral.

The returning officer of Sanganer constituency Jagat Rajeshwar said the FIR was lodged with Bani Park Police Station under sections of the Representation of the People's Act on Monday.

The case has been transferred to CID (CB) for investigation as the matter is related to a sitting MLA.

Ahuja is a three-time MLA from Ramgarh constituency in Rajasthan's Alwar district. He quit the BJP after being denied a ticket for the upcoming Rajasthan assembly elections.

"My name was dropped by the party without taking me into confidence. I was not even told about the reason why my name was dropped. After pressure from my supporters and family members, I resigned from the party. I will now contest the elections from the Sanganer seat," he said yesterday (November 19).

After denial of ticket, Ahuja filed his nomination papers from Sanganer constituency as an independent candidate on Monday.

Ahuja said issues of gau raksha (cow protection) and construction of Ram temple on Ram Janmabhoomi will be on his agenda.

He has been at loggerheads with the state BJP leadership. Ahuja had demanded the removal of Vasundhara Raje as the chief minister after the party's losses in by-polls held earlier this year.

Ahuja first hit headlines, when he said that "thousands of condoms were found on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in New Delhi daily".

He also supported cow vigilantes on various previous occasions in Alwar, when incidents of mob lynching were on the rise in the district.
