In Short

  • Shivraj was the state's longest-serving chief minister since 2005
  • He took responsibility of BJP's defeat in state elections and resigned
  • We will now play the role of chowkidar, he had said

Days after taking responsibility for the defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recently-concluded assembly election in Madhya Pradesh, outgoing Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday changed his Twitter bio from "the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh" to "the common man of Madhya Pradesh".

Chouhan also said that the state is his temple and called the public his God. "Madhya Pradesh is my temple and the masses are my God. The doors of my house are always open to every citizen of the state and they can come to me without any hesitation. I'll be helping them as usual," he wrote on Twitter.

He resigned on Wednesday after the Congress emerged as the single largest party in the assembly elections. "The complete responsibility of the defeat is mine," Chouhan said outside Raj Bhavan after submitting his resignation letter. "Now it is our responsibility to play the role of chowkidar (watchman)," Chouhan said.

At the end of a cliffhanger this year, the BJP garnered 109 seats in the 230-member assembly. With wins in 114 seats, the Congress party emerged as the single largest party in the state and is poised to form the government with the help of independents, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party.

However, the saffron party polled 41 per cent of the votes, more than Congress' 40.9 per cent vote share. Shivraj Singh Chouhan was the state's longest-serving chief minister since 2005.

Kamal Nath, a nine time-MP from Chhindwara who runs the Congress's Madhya Pradesh unit, was made chief minister-designate on December 13. He is scheduled to take oath on Monday.
