Kerala Congress working president MI Shanavas dies at 67
KPCC working president MI Shanavas was a two-time MP from Kerala’s Wayanad constituency.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president MI Shanavas died at a Chennai hospital this morning after a prolonged illness. He was 67.

MI Shanavas breathed his last on Wednesday (November 21), around 1 am. He had undergone a liver transplant on November 2 and suffered from an internal infection during the surgery. Since then, he had been undergoing treatment at Dr Rela Institute and Medical Centre in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

His mortal remains are expected to be brought to Kerala's Kochi in the afternoon. His last rites will be performed at his residence in Kochi in the evening.

Soon after the news of his demise, tributes poured in from the Congress leadership.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan along with senior Congress leader and former chief minister Oommen Chandy and opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, expressed their condolences over MI Shanavas' demise.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi and party MP Shashi Tharoor, too, tweeted their thoughts and prayers.


MI Shanavas was a Member of Parliament who represented Kerala's Wayanad constituency twice in the Lok Sabha. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
