An Indian army soldier lost his life and three others were injured in an encounter in Nadigam of South Kashmir's Shopian district Tuesday morning just minutes before the Panchayat polls.

Lance Havaldar Vijay Kumar, 37, who hailed from Haryana was martyred.

Four militants were also killed in the encounter. Their bodies have been recovered from the spot. Officials said their identities was being ascertained.

A joint team of Army's 34RR, 23 PARA and SOG Shopian mounted the operation after receiving specific input about the presence of the militants.

The team began a cordon and search operation around 2 am on Tuesday. As the joint team of forces approached the suspected house, the militants began firing at the team.

The initial firing resulted in injuring four army soldiers and one of them later succumbed to the injuries.

Paramilitary forces have been deployed in the area to counter any law and order problems. The locals also reported that internet services were suspended in the district.
