The accident took place when Akash, while taking a turn, rammed his black sedan into the wall of Royal Calcutta Golf Club in the posh Golf Garden area near the MP's house, police said.

The car crashed into the boundary wall, breaking a portion of it, with the driver trapped inside. The broken portion of the wall fell on the vehicle, which is registered in the BJP MP's name.

Police from the nearby Jadavpur station inspected the accident spot and arrested Akash for rash driving and damaging property. Locals alleged he was driving in an inebriated condition.

"We have arrested him for rash driving and damaging properties. No casualty was reported in the accident. His blood sample has been collected to check if it was a case of drunk driving, while the car will be sent for a forensic test," the senior officer said.

Police are also ascertaining the speed at which the vehicle was being driven at the time of the accident.

Akash will be produced at Alipore court later in the day, he added.

Akash came out of the car with minor injuries with the help of his father, who rushed out of their apartment on hearing the commotion.

Locals claimed many people had a narrow escape as the car was being driven at a breakneck speed.

There was no report of any other injuries as several people present at the spot scampered to safety on time, police said quoting eyewitnesses.

"My son has met with an accident near MY RESIDENCE. I called police to tke care of it with all legal implications... No favours/ politics plz. I love my son & will tk cr of him BUT, LAW SHOULD TAKE ITS OWN COURSE (sic)," she said.
