The Delhi Cabinet, in its meeting on Monday morning, directed the concerned departments to augment the supply of subsidised onions throughout Delhi in anticipation of the increased demand post the festival of Navratris.

The meeting of the Delhi Cabinet was chaired by the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The Food and Civil Supplies Department and the Delhi States Civil Supplies Corporation (DSCSC) were directed to increase the supply of onions.

The cabinet also directed the Department and DSCSC to increase the number of mobile vans selling onions. At least one mobile van should be provided in each ward of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi -- 4 to 6 mobile vans in each assembly constituency.

The chief minister also directed the Commissioner, Food and Civil Supplies to intensify the enforcement activities by making regular field inspections and carrying out enforcement activities in order to check the instances of hoardings, black-marketing, profiteering.

The enforcement teams will also check the implementation of stock limits prescribed for the onions and violators may strictly be proceeded against as per provisions of law..

The cabinet approved the proposal of the Food and Civil Supplies Department for direct retailing of onion by Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation Ltd. through fair price shops and mobile vans.

The Food and Civil Supplies Department through its Corproration DSCSC had already started distributing subsidized onions from September 28th to the public of Delhi through fair price shops and mobile vans in Delhi after procuring it from NAFED on the directions of the chief minister.

The cabinet approved the proposal for procurement of onion at Rs 15. 60 per kg from NAFED and sale of onion through its FPS outlets and mobile vans at Rs 23.90 per kg. The cabinet also approved the payment of margin money at the rate of Rs four per kg to the fair price shop dealers for making available onion to the general public.

The cabinet directed Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation and Food and Supplies Department to engage adequate transport for ensuring regular and timely supply of onions to the fair price shops and also through the mobile vans.

Food and Civil supplies minister Imran Hussain informed that the various steps taken by the government such as making subsidised onions available to the people of Delhi, has helped in keeping the prices of onion in check to a great extent.

The Delhi government will continue to provide subsidised onions till the time the onion prices in Delhi stabilise.
