An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on Richter scale struck Nicobar islands region at 2:49 pm Wednesday, stated the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Developed by Charles F Richter, the Richter scale is used to measure the magnitute of earthquake.

Gujarat's Kutch was also hit by an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on Monday. No loss of life or damage to property was reported.

"The quake was felt at 2.43 pm with its epicentre recorded 6 km north-north west of Bhachau in Kutch district," said an official of the Gandhinagar-based Institute of Seismological Research.

Several areas, including Anjar, Gandhidham, Bhachau and Rapar, experienced the quake in the district, located around 330 km from here, another official said.

An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 shook Palghar district in Maharashtra on Tuesday morning. No loss of life or damage to property was reported, regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said.

The quake, having its epicenter at a depth of 10 km in Dundalwadi village of Dahanu taluka, was felt around 5.38 am, he said.

The district's Dahanu area has been experiencing such tremors since November last year, with most of them centered around Dundalwadi village.
