With polls right around the corner, the rangolis having lotus flowers at the Srivilliputhur Andal temple in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district have been covered up, allegedly by officials of the Election Commission of India.

The rangolis, especially symbols of lotus, were covered with white paint. This was allegedly done because it is against the model code of conduct as lotus is the election symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The act carried out by poll officials was highly condemned by the temple authorities.

The poll code of conduct states that no place of worship or any religious site should be used for election propaganda.

After Hindu groups expressed their discontent over the matter saying lotus is a seat of goddess Lakshmi, the district officers have assured that it will be looked into.
