Though reduced penalties for traffic offences have come into force in Gujarat, a man managed to escape with a zero rupee challan for not wearing a helmet while driving.

For Zakir Mamon, a fruit shop owner from Bodeli town in Gujarat's Chhota Udaipur district, the size of his head has become a bigger headache than paying fines.

Traffic cops recently caught Zakir driving his two-wheeler without a helmet. He had all the relevant documents but was not wearing his helmet. When cops asked him to pay the fine, he gave them his reason for not wearing a helmet, which baffled them.

Zakir told the cops that he cannot wear any helmet because no helmet fits his large head. He further told them that he had been to every shop in the city, but could not find a helmet that fits his head.

The man insisted that he is a law abiding citizen and wants to wear a helmet but can never fit into one. Zakir himself asked the police to help him find a solution for this.

On hearing about Zakir's problem, the cops sympathised with him. They found that his problem was genuine and did not fine him.

Last week, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had announced new fine rates for traffic offences, rolling back hefty penalties laid down in the amended Motor Vehicles Act by up to 90 per cent.
