Eight people died and more than 12 people were injured this morning in an accident on a highway in Jhajjar, Haryana.

Nearly 50 vehicles were hit on Rohtak-Rewari highway due to dense fog conditions. School bus, cars and SUVs collided causing a 2-km long traffic jam on the highway.

Of the eight dead, six are women.

Images from the accident site show wrecked vehicles being removed from the highway.

"Compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be given to the kin of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh to those severely injured and Rs 50,000 to those who have received minor injuries," Haryana minister OP Dhankar said.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) observed moderate fog at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh in the morning hours. Visibility at Patiala, Ambala, Hissar, Bikaner, Bareilly and New Delhi (Safdarjung) was as low as 500 m.
