The MeT department forecast "heavy to very heavy rain" in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Thursday, and a holiday was announced for schools and colleges in Chennai.

On November 22, "heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places" is "very likely" in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the India Meterological Department (IMD) said.

Holidays were announced in several parts of the region -- but in Thiruvarur and Puducherry, only schools were closed.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. He said he submitted a memorandum seeking Rs 15,000 crore in assistance, and Rs 1,500 crore as interim relief in the wake of Cyclone Gaja.

He said he'd also requested Modi to send a central team to carry out an assessment.
