Boat carrying 33 people capsizes in Karnataka, 18 rescued, 8 bodies recovered, search on

There were 33 people on the boat that capsized. Of them, 18 were immediately rescued--14 by local fishermen and four by India Coast Guard. Eight bodies were recovered and search for others is on.

Diving teams of the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard have recovered eight bodies from the Kali river in Karnataka after a bait carrying 33 people capsized on Monday.

In a tweet, the India Navy said, "Of the 33 passengers, 18 were immediately rescued--14 by local fishermen and four by India Coast Guard."

It said eight bodies have been recovered till now and the search operation is on to trace seven people who are still missing.

The accident took place neaqr Karwar



Earlier the news agency ANI had reported that the Indian Navy has recovered 16 bodies from the river. This was based on a tweet posted by the Navy. Both, ANI and the Navy, later corrected the figures.

The Navy had to deploy a Chetak helicopter with divers onboard. The helicopter took off from Goa for Karwar at 5:05 pm on Monday.
