Kashmir: Not a single life lost, not a single bullet fired, says govt

Amid caution by the Centre to exercise restraint in Jammu and Kashmir, the general secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Sitram Yechury visited Srinagar on Thursday and met his party colleague Yousuf Tarigami. The CPI(M) leader's visit comes a day after the Supreme court granted him permission to meet his colleague. Meanwhile, mobile phone services have resumed in five districts of Jammu region. Kashmir has been under lockdown after the Narendra Modi-led government announced the revocation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the State into two Union Territories.

Not even in one incident any hospital has reported shortage of drug or of any disposable item. Not a single life has been lost, not a single bullet has been fired post August 5. There has been gradual but positive improvement in situation on ground: MEA

The MEA spokesperson said that there have been some "false report related to that and the local administration already denied that". He said, "We are witnessing gradual and positive development after 5th August."

After Supreme Court's order, Sitaram Yechury visits Srinagar, meets party colleague

Communist Party of India (Marxist) Sitaram Yechury on Thursday afternoon became the first opposition leader to visit Jammu and Kashmir nearly a month after the Centre scrapped special status from the state and divided it into two Union Territories-Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh.

As soon as the CPIM leader reached the Srinagar airport, he was taken away in a seven-vehicle convoy to his party colleague Yousuf Tarigami's house in the capital, as reported by a news agency.

Sitaram Yechury reaches Srinagar

CPIM leader Sitaram Yechury had complained to the Supreme Court that he was not allowed to enter the Kashmir valley by authorities and could not meet his colleague Tarigami. The CPIM leader had told the apex court that he was apprehensive about the well being of his colleague.

Sitaram Yechury had also told the court that Tarigami is not in a good health condition and may need to be shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. Following which the apex court had asked the senior superintendent of police in Srinagar to allow Sitaram Yechury to travel Kashmir.

Sitaram Yechury reaches Kashmir, whisked away amid tight security

In the first visit by any opposition leader to Kashmir after the revocation of Article 370, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury on Thursday reached the valley to meet ailing party MLA Yousuf Tarigami. Armed with the Supreme Court's permission, the CPM General Secretary reached Srinagar this morning to inquire about the health of his party colleague Tarigami. Tarigami is the lone Communist MLA in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

Soon after landing, he was whisked away in a VIP entourage of more than seven cars to take him to Tarigami's residence. Security agencies are unlikely to allow Yechury any political meeting or media interactions apart from meeting his party colleague as per the apex court's order.

Kashmir: Valley remains under heavy lockdown

Kashmir remains under heavy lockdown since August 5, barring working of a few landline services. The Valley was under severe restrictions soon after the Narendra Modi-led government announced the scrapping of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Amid caution by the Centre to exercise restraint, the Supreme Court on Wednesday granted permission to a Kashmiri student and CPIM leader Sitaram Yechury to visit the Valley. It also comes a day after the apex court referred to a five-judge Bench challenging the abrogation of Article 370.
