Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that it was the party's prerogative to decide the candidate from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat. His comments came while responding to a question about contesting the polls from the high-profile seat. Addressing a joint press conference with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Rahul Gandhi said, "Whatever the CEC and Congress president will ask me to do, I will do it... Such decisions are made at our CEC." Speculation has been rife that Rahul Gandhi, who has been renominated by the Congress from Kerala's Wayanad, may also contest from Amethi. Rahul Gandhi has won the Amethi seat three consecutive times since 2004. However, Irani won the seat by 55,000 votes in 2019, earning her the tag of 'giant slayer'.

At noon on Wednesday, the Sun’s rays fell on the forehead of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, a 'Surya tilak' of the deity made possible by an elaborate mechanism involving mirrors and lenses. This was the first Ram Navami since the consecration of the Ram idol at the new temple, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22. The system was tested by the scientists on Tuesday. "The basic objective of the Surya Tilak project is to focus a 'tilak' on the forehead of Shri Ram idol on every Shri Ram Navami day. Under the project, sunlight will be brought on the forehead of Lord Ram at noon on Shri Ram Navami in the Chaitra month every year," Dr S K Panigrahi, a scientist at CSIR-CBRI Roorkee, who was associated with the project told news agency PTI.

Addressing an election rally at the Borkura ground in Assam's Nalbari, PM Modi said that the birth celebrations of Lord Ram were being held in the temple at Ayodhya after 500 years with a 'Surya Tilak' ceremony. Earlier in the day, Modi greeted people on the occasion of Ram Navami on Wednesday and said Ayodhya is in incomparable bliss as this is the first time the festival would be celebrated there after the consecration of the Ram temple. ''We cannot join the celebrations at Ayodhya but let us participate in the event by switching on our mobile flashlights and offering our prayers to Lord Ram," the PM said at the rally.
