Lalji Tandon on Monday took oath as the governor of Madhya Pradesh at Raj Bhawan in Bhopal. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by acting Chief Justice of MP High Court, Justice Ravishankar Jha.

Lalji Tandon had been serving as governor of Bihar but was appointed Madhya Pradesh Governor last week in a reshuffle of governors carried out by the Union Government. Former Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has been moved to Uttar Pradesh in the same capacity.

Those who were present at the oath ceremony included Chief Minister Kamal Nath, former CM Digvijaya Singh, Justices of the High Court, MLAs and Ministers, Chief Secretary SR Mohanty and DGP VK Singh, and a number of officers.

Lalji Tandon was elected Lok Sabha MP from Lucknow in 2009 after the seat was vacated by his political mentor, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Tandon has been member of the UP Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly both and has served as Minister in a number of governments in Uttar Pradesh.

After the oath ceremony, the governor inspected a guard of honour.

Tandon’s appointment as Madhya Pradesh Governor is being seen by many in political circles as a precursor to the intensification of attacks between the Congress and BJP in the state, especially since the Congress rules the state with 114 MLAs in a 230-member House.
