Maharashtra floods updates: Toll rises to 30, Bangalore-Mangalore blocked after landslide

A flood-like situation has developed in various districts across the state due to heavy rains. The situation might take a turn for the worse in the upcoming days.

Heavy rains battered large swathes of the country and the situation remained grim in flood-hit parts of Maharashtra. Several deaths in rain and flood-related incidents have been reported from western Maharashtra in the last seven days. Floodgates were also opened in the dams in Maharashtra.

Nearly 2.5 lakh people have been evacuated in Sangli, Kolhapur and Pune, Divisional Commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar said. He warned people against travelling on the Mumbai-Bengaluru national highway.

Here are the Updates:

9 pm: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescued over 8,000 people from Sangli district and over 2,000 people from Kolhapur district.

7.15 pm: Rescue operations continue in Sirol area of Kolhapur.

6.45 pm: Death toll rises to 29 in Pune division (Solapur, Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur and Pune), due to floods, six people missing. As many as 2.85 lakh people have been evacuated to a safe place from Pune division.

6 pm: People from areas under water for over two days to get financial aid, Maharashtra order said. The BJP-led Maharashtra government on Friday drew flak for laying down a norm that financial aid would be given to people in those areas which had been under water for more than two days.

05:10 pm: Water being released into Godavari from Gangapur dam due to incessant rains. The water level of the Godavari has risen but it is flowing within its banks, the officials said.

05:05 pm: Maharashtra minister accused of disaster tourism: Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan stoked a controversy after two selfie videos surfaced purportedly showing him smiling and waving hands cheerfully as he inspected parts of the flood-hit district. This prompted the opposition NCP, the Congress and the MNS to rebuke Mahajan, who in turn, asked them not to politicise flood relief work. Alleging the BJP minister was on "disaster tourism", the NCP also asked Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to seek resignation of the "insensitive" water resources minister.

05:00 pm: NDRF work underway in parts of Maharashtra

04:30 pm: Indian Airforce helicopter landed in Sangli and one more landing in few minutes. Total 34 teams are working in Kolhapur and 36 teams in Sangli. (These include NDRF, Navy, CoastGuard, SDRF etc).

04:08 pm: Bangalore-Mangalore road blocked due to landslide near Doddakoppalu, 15 KMS from Sakaleshpura towards Shiradi.

04:00 pm: Karnataka increases water discharge from Almatti dam. The move is expected to ease flood situation in Kolhapur and Sangli districts of Maharashtra.

02:47 pm: Sharad Pawar urges Maharashtra govt to waive farmers loans in flood-hit areas

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has urged the Maharashtra government to waive loans of farmers who hail from flood-affected areas in the state.

The NCP also said all public representatives of the party will donate one month's salary for flood relief.

8:30 am| 12 Navy teams deployed in Sangli

Twelve rescue teams of Navy have left last night for Sangli by road in state government transport after the airlift was aborted due to unfavorable weather condition in Kolhapur and Sangli. Police escorts were provided for a green corridor till Sangli.

The 12 Navy teams will be deployed today in Sangli in addition to the teams already present in Kolhapur. The situation in Sangli remains the same.
