Most of the jobs are of Class 3 and 4 in government service. Pointing out that this situation clearly contradicts Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claims in Parliament about ample job creation, opposition Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) alleged that prime minister has manipulated data.

Almost 10 per cent of the country's population is in Maharashtra. A large number of applications for jobs shows that there is a job crisis and employment generation is at an all-time low in the last 45 years. The PM presented manipulated data on jobs. The government itself is giving different figures on Mudra loans every time. The PM presented a different figure yesterday. All this shows that there is job issue, NCP national spokesperson Nawab Malik said

According to experts, this clearly shows that even if people are engaged with some employment, those are inadequate for their needs. Employment can’t be measured only in quantity. The question remains if quality employment is provided or not. If not then people try to jump on to any opportunity which may provide them adequate employment, Sanjeev Chandorkar, associate professor for Center for Water Policy, Regulation and Governance with Tata Institute of Social Sciences said.

Even economists are raising questions over claims of job-creation, looking at the data for job applications. It was expected that people tend to opt for government jobs as they find it secure and safe. We can’t say that the government has not done anything to create jobs. It's the responsibility of the government to conduct a survey and get us the exact number.

There is a problem after demonetisation. Many sectors have come under formal economy from the informal economy but you can't call that as new jobs. It's just a switch, G Chandrashekhar, economics director with Indian Merchant’s Chamber said.

Although Maharashtra government hasn’t yet responded, the next drive for 12,000 jobs will begin in the next few weeks.
