Maharashtra Muslim Manch (MMM), an umbrella organisation of 40 NGOs working for the Muslims, has come forward in the support of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise being conducted in Assam.

The MMM has stated that the NRC is essential against the illegal migrants. It also has suggested that the Union government should guide the agencies conducting NRC surveys on not to harass the Indian Muslims.

"We welcome the decision regarding the NRC against the illegal migrants and we duly support it to save national unity, integrity and harmony," read a statement issued by the MMM.

Fakir Mohammed Thakur, the chief convener of MMM, told India Today TV that his organisation is in favour of NRC because some so-called secular parties are trying to divide the society in name of religion.

"Whenever any Muslim leader announces his opposition to the NRC, it is presumed that he is anti-Hindu and anti-India. That unnecessarily creates suspicion among the minds of our Hindu brothers. We don't want that to happen," Thakur said.

Without naming any party, the MMM blamed the politicians for using the Muslims and dalits as their vote bank. "After 1947, the politicians tried to polarise the Muslim community. The so-called secular parties used Muslims and dalits as their vote bank. They always terrorised these communities in the name of the RSS and the BJP. Now, as these communities are not voting for them they have been thrown out of power."

Thakur said that the MMM officials might travel to Assam to educate the Muslims on the issue of NRC. "We will soon announce a plan in this regard," he said.
