Chennai and several other parts of Tamil Nadu felt mild tremors on Tuesday morning as an earthquake measuring 5.1 on Richter scale hit the Bay of Bengal.

The moderate intensity earthquake which hit Bay of Bengal, around 600 km east-northeast of Chennai, was felt more in areas closer to coast at 7 am. No tsunami warning has been given.

"The epicenter was in the ocean and obviously there was no damage and as per initial assessments, it lasted for a few seconds," Deputy Director General of Meteorology, IMD, Chennai, S Balachandran, told PTI.

"There is no tsunami warning," the official said, adding, more details will be provided later.

A few Twitter users said they felt mild tremors, while others said they did not feel anything.
