A delegation of members of the ABVP from Awadh region has also met the deputy CM in this regard.

A circular from the Gujarat education board dated had December 31 stated that students in Gujarat government schools have to respond to their attendance call by saying 'Jai Hind' or 'Jai Bharat' instead of 'Yes Sir' to foster "a feeling of patriotism".

The directive by the BJP-led government has been severely criticised by the opposition who said that the Gujarat government should focus on improving the quality of education.

The notification issued by the Directorate of Primary Education and Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) applies to all students of classes 1 to 12 of the government, grant-in-aid and self-financed schools.

"Even local private schools have said that this is a good decision of the state government," he claimed.

The rule was put to effect from January 1, 2019.

Defending the move, Gujarat Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said Tuesday that the government should be open to accepting "good suggestions".
