A little boy fell in a sewer in Patna's Punaichak area on November 17. After 10-year-old Deepak fell in the sewer, a rescue operation was kicked-off. For several hours the authorities tried to locate the boy but he has not been found yet.

The boy lived in the Punaichak area and was on his way to deliver food to his father when he had an encounter with a cow. Deepak made several moves to dodge the animal and doing so he fell in the four-ft-deep sewer.

Upon hearing the news of the incident, a team of the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the police rushed to the site and initiated the rescue operation. According to the eyewitnesses, the boy fell in the sewer at around 2 pm but the rescue teams arrived there two hours after the incident had happened.

First, the PMC officials tried to hunt for the boy using a JCB machine but later a team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was called in.

"A 10-year-old boy has fallen in the sewer and our first priority is to safely rescue him. The flow of the water in the sewer pipe was strong and therefore it appears that the boy has flown away," Rajesh Prabhakar, DSP (secretariat) said.

NEGLIGENCE OF PMC

The accident sheds light on the incompetence and negligence of the PMC. The portal was not barricaded which turned it into a death trap.

Speaking to India Today, PMC deputy commissioner Vishal Anand said that the focus of the municipal corporation was to rescue the boy but asserted that the matter will be investigated.

"We would not like to comment on the negligence which has taken place in this case as it's a matter of investigation. We are presently focused on rescuing the boy. The PMC will investigate the case and see what action can be taken," Vishal Anand said.

Local MLA Sanjeev Chaurasia was also present at the site and oversaw the rescue operation.
